About ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a predominantly childhood mental health issue that often follows into adulthood. The primary aspect of this problem is difficulty with attention and extreme hyperactivity.

ADHD is separated into three categories, depending on the most prevalent symptoms. The three categories include:

Predominantly inattentive

This presentation of ADHD means that you show signs of trouble focusing on tasks, forget to do chores or where you put things, and have difficulty paying attention to conversations. The inattentive form of ADHD also presents with easy distraction and trouble with organization.

Predominantly hyperactive

In this form of ADHD, you show symptoms such as trouble sitting still, interrupting conversations frequently, and talking incessantly. Impulsivity is one of the most significant issues with predominantly hyperactive ADHD.

Combined

Combined ADHD means that you have equal signs and symptoms of both inattentiveness and hyperactivity.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

The symptoms you experience with ADHD depend on the most dominant trait of your disorder. However, if you have the combined form of this disorder, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Trouble focusing
  • Problems with organization
  • Easily distracted
  • Forgets to do daily tasks
  • Fidgets or can’t sit still
  • Excessive talking
  • Always on the go
  • Highly impulsive

You may experience all of these symptoms or only a few. How you react depends on the form of ADHD that you have. These symptoms may affect how you live your life and impact important things like your relationships and your job.

How is ADHD treated?

If your child has ADHD, the first treatment is often a combination of behavior therapy, parental training, and school interventions. Medication is often reserved for more severe cases of ADHD.

As an adult with ADHD, your treatment may involve medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. The goal of the medications is to reduce your symptoms to allow you to live a productive life.

Psychotherapy allows you to find ways to manage your behaviors to minimize any distractions. It also helps you learn organizational skills and sometimes incorporates your family members to provide some structure in your life.

The team at Sage Mental Wellness takes your symptoms and goals into account when forming your treatment plan.
